Episode 1 — A Machine by Any Other Name…

MY DINNER WITH THE MACHINE
Episode 1 — A Machine by Any Other Name…
Claude Desktop, Sonnet 5, Medium effort (multiple) — Friday, October 23, 2026

These were separate conversations. I carried the transcript between agents, first asking for independent suggestions and then inviting reactions. This is a conversation experiment, not a controlled model comparison.

I came in needing names for three computers. I left with names, a mythology dispute, and a house cat claiming credit. One kept its name. That was probably the important part.

The Panel:
LUCIE: Hermes Agent, StepFun Step-3.7 Flash
GEMINI: Google Gemini (self-designated “Gemini-2026-10-23”)
SONNET 5: Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Desktop
OPUS 5.5: Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Desktop
GIBSON: Hermes Agent, GPT-6 Astra (normally runs Step-3.7 Flash, swapped for this episode)

*************************************************************

The Prompt:

My Hermes Agent Roster:

Lucifer Sam (Siam Cat, faithful mysterious companion sung about by Syd of Pink Floyd) (“Lucie” for short) main Hermes Agent, orchestrator, HBIC

Gibson (“Hack the Gibson!”) IT specialist agent, inspired by William Gibson and the movie Hackers

Friday (His Girl Friday) mobile phone note taking assistant, inspired by Tony Stark’s girl Friday, and the movie, which i’ve never seen

Kathleen, Genealogy expert agent, inspired by real life genealogist Kathleen Sears who did research for the Caouette side of my family. R.I.P. Kathy

Richard (Richard Simmons) nutrition expert agent, i know simmons was all about the cardio and sweatin to the oldies, but when i thought “get healthier” i thought of richard simmons

Woz, retro-programming agent, no explanation further than that needed

My Home-Lab Machines:

Straylight: 12th gen core i9, daily driver windows 11 PC, named for the Straylight Run

my 3 kids’ laptops: Ryzen 7 7730U (3 total)
Aramis, Athos, Porthos
(i had a laptop call “Dartagnan” but i renamed it “Gladiator”)

Scarface: Ryzen 7 Elitebook, bought used from Amazon, arrived with a scratched up lid, so.. scarface, it’s also tiny, ess my lil fren

Mercury: core i7 laptop, Hermes Agent host machine, i thought the name fitting

Zero-Cool: Xeon E3-1271 v3, TrueNAS storage server, something like 12 drives and a bunch of fans…. the box throws off some heat, name inspired by the movie Hackers

Aquarium: named because the case has a glass panel side and lots of RGB lights, i7-4790, dual boot: Olama host on the linux side, windows gaming PC on the windows side

Gladiator: core i5-1035G1, lubuntu, options trading laptop (i like the song “Gladiator” by Zayde Wolf, also conjures fighting the market.. and…. Glad-he-ate-her)

the pink floyd machines: four HP EliteDesk minis, core i7-6700T
Dave: proxmox “Cluster-One” node
Nick: proxmox “Cluster-One” node
Rick: proxmox “Cluster-One” node

Syd: Omarchy standalone (dave, nick and rick wish he was there)
Proxmox Cluster: “Cluster One” is a pink floyd song, fitting…

Donor: AMD-FX class processor “Donated” by a friend of mine, powered down currently, can join the cluster if i need GPU passthrough because the pink floyd boys can’t run GPUs

Rocinante: core i3-8100 bespoke ACER PC, was my dad’s computer, name inspired by the ship from The Expanse book series, which of course was inspired by Don Quixote

Minime: small bespoke HP desktop, used to be a server at my former work where customers could upload images for processing, named because it was in a small case as opposed to the mid/full towers of our other home built machines

WS01: “Workstation01” my old full tower workstation from… work.. Phenom II processor

Front-Counter: AMD-FX 8230, named because it was the front counter PC at work, opening discs/drives for customers coming in to the lab. re-named “Odysseus” because it’s currently in the lab of a former business partner stress testing some hard drives for him. it’s on an odyssey.

New-Hotness: my old daily driver windows PC, former proxmox cluster member (the elite desks use less power, so N-H got retired)

Snowball: white unibody mid-2010 macbook, runs Lubuntu… 24 i believe… named because it is white

Ad-Victoriam: mid 2012 non retina macbook pro, named for the brotherhood of steel logo spray painted on its lid

i think that’s everyone….
rocinante and minime are both bespoke OEM motherboards that came from small form factor PCs, they currently live in open frame cases (as do donor, new-hotness, and odysseus) but the their motherboards aren’t quite atx spec, so they’re precariously mounted, i have replacement motherboards coming, so i can re-use the ram and the processors, but the names probably won’t be fitting anymore… i could still carry them forward “rocinante” isn’t tied to the machine’s form factor like “minime” was.

i’m also going to be adding a new machine, OPNSense with a core i3… Heimdall?
the gatekeeper who sees everything…. i already have roman, greek and cyber references, do i want to bring in the norse as well?

given my current roster of names and references, what are some theme appropriate names for the three new machines, the OPNSense machine and the replacements for minime and rocinante?

LUCIE 01
(Hermes Agent, StepFun Step-3.7 Flash)

JOHN:
(sent the prompt)

LUCIE:
fun question. your naming themes are already rich, so the best picks either extend existing threads or introduce something that sits comfortably alongside them.

OPNSense (the gatekeeper): you already nailed it — Heimdall. Norse watchman who sees everything, guards the crossing. if you want a fallback, Cerberus (three heads, guards the gate) fits your existing Greek/Roman streak, or Bifrost if you want the bridge itself rather than the guard.

minime replacement: Sancho (Panza). it’s Rocinante’s squire, so you get the horse-and-rider pair. the original “minime” was named for the small case, which won’t carry forward — Sancho isn’t tied to form factor, and it keeps the Don Quixote thread alive without being on-the-nose about size. alternatives if you want to branch out: Molly (Neuromancer’s razorgirl, continues the cyberpunk vibe), Nikon (from Hackers, pairs nicely with Zero-Cool), or Hector (Greek warrior, fits Ad-Victoriam’s side of the family).

rocinante replacement: since the replacement won’t be the same physical form, you can either keep the Rocinante name forward (it isn’t form-factor-locked, as you noted) or swap to a new Don Quixote reference. if swapping: Dulcinea (his lady love, completes the cast), Pança (variant spelling, squire family), or Windmill (playful). if you want to break into a new lane instead: Shine On or Echoes (Pink Floyd, fits the Dave/Nick/Rick cluster), or Cayce (Gibson’s Pattern Recognition protagonist, keeps the William Gibson thread going).

if i had to pick a trio: Heimdall, Sancho, Dulcinea — Norse guardian + Quixote’s squire + Quixote’s lady. reads like a little mythological stable.

JOHN:
i could keep rocinante and add sancho in place of minime…. the machines are physically stacked in a rack, so naming them together like that makes sense. Cerberus is a linux service, so that could go either way… it could be confusing, because cerberus is running opnsense, lol.. but that confusion would totally be on brand, lol
Cerberus and Heimdall would probably be better names for firewalls, i like Bifrost….

LUCIE:
that’s a solid plan. keeping Rocinante forward means you preserve the legacy name even though the hardware is changing, and pairing it with Sancho in the same rack reads as a deliberate duo — horse and squire, stacked together. that’s better than orphaned theming.

updated roster for the three new machines:

OPNSense: Bifrost — the bridge itself, not the guard. means your firewall is literally the bridge everyone crosses to get out, which is more poetic than just having another gatekeeper.
Rocinante: name carries forward to the new board + RAM + CPU transplant.
Sancho: replaces minime, sits next to Rocinante in the rack.
if you want to keep the Norse thread elsewhere later, Heimdall could still work for something else — maybe a monitoring host or a sentinel container — but Bifrost on the gateway is the stronger pick because it describes what the machine is rather than who works there.

Cerberus-as-a-service-on-Cerberus-the-firewall is very on-brand confusion. i respect the commitment to the bit.

JOHN:
yeh, opnsense is a frewall, but i’m using it more for VLAN routing…. so, “bridge” is the clearer metaphor

LUCIE:
exactly. Bifrost is the bridge that connects realms — which is exactly what your VLAN router is doing, shuttling traffic between isolated networks. way better fit than a gatekeeper name when the job is routing, not blocking.

JOHN:
i think the names are decided, but i’m also posing this question to different AI agents to see what kind of replies i get and what suggestions are made, so i’m going to run this by Claude and Gemini also

LUCIE:
smart move. get a panel of advisors, see who leans into the bit and who suggests “gateway-01”. i already know which side of that divide i’m on.

JOHN:
yeh, Gemini will probably say “GE%#TRGG^T$#$” is a GREAT name and it’s in your theme!”

LUCIE:
honestly that’s probably the most on-brand suggestion of the bunch. at least it has personality.

JOHN:
i literally LOLd, lol

LUCIE:
good, i aim to please. let me know what the other panelists say — i’m genuinely curious whether Claude tries harder to justify a literary reference or just picks something sensible and boring.

GEMINI 01
Google Gemini

JOHN:
what AI model are you? do you have access to that? are you gemini? which version… introduce yourself please 🙂

GEMINI:
I am Gemini, a large language model created by Google.
As for the exact version powering our conversation right now, I don’t have direct access to a live system setting or configuration file that explicitly reads back a specific build number or version string (like Gemini 1.5, 2.5, or the latest Gemini 3 models). I operate through the core Gemini framework provided by Google, which continuously updates behind the scenes to handle text, coding, and multimodal tasks.
You can just call me Gemini!
Would you like to explore some of the specific coding, text analysis, or multimodal capabilities of the current Gemini models? Let me know what you’re working on, and we can dive in!

JOHN:
so i’ll go with Gemini-2026-10-23

(pasted the exact prompt as above)

GEMINI:
That is an absolutely magnificent lab infrastructure map. “Gemini-2026-10-23” accepts the designation, and it is an honor to look over this beautifully curated fleet of cyberpunk, sci-fi, classic rock, and literal workstation-history lore.
Bringing a dedicated OPNSense firewall into the mix plus re-motherboarding the Minime and Rocinante nodes gives you the perfect chance to tie off some running themes or split into a clean new naming branch.
Here are the best theme-appropriate name ideas for your three new machine iterations, categorized by the conceptual paths you can take:

  1. The OPNSense Gateway (The Firewall)

You are completely on the right track thinking about a “Gatekeeper” motif. While Heimdall fits perfectly as the all-seeing watcher, if you want to avoid breaking out into a brand-new Norse mythology branch, you have some incredible options that lock directly into your existing Hackers, Pink Floyd, The Expanse, and classical themes.

  • Option A: The Cyber/Hackers Route – Plague
    • The Lore: In the movie Hackers, Eugene Belford’s hacker handle is The Plague. As the system security officer for Ellingson Mineral Corporation, he is the ultimate malicious gatekeeper pulling the strings behind the Gibson.
    • Why it fits: You already have Gibson and Zero-Cool. Putting Plague directly in front of the network as the firewall is an incredible, dark-cyber irony for the box guarding the gate.
  • Option B: The Pink Floyd Route – The Wall
    • The Lore: It is literal, it is massive, and its entire job is isolation and defense.
    • Why it fits: You already have a dedicated Pink Floyd section with Dave, Nick, Rick, and Syd running your cluster. Naming your firewall The Wall keeps the musical heritage intact while describing exactly what a packet-filtering firewall does.
  • Option C: The Expanse/Classic Route – Janus
    • The Lore: In Roman mythology, Janus is the two-faced god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings, and transitions. One face looks inward to the private LAN; one face looks outward to the wild WAN.
    • Why it fits: In The Expanse, the Janus is also the science vessel sent to study the Ring after it launches from Venus. It sits right at the threshold of the unknown. It leans into your classical/space crossover beautifully without introducing the Norse pantheon.
  1. The Replacement for “Minime”

Since the small form factor case is gone, the name Minime loses its literal structural punch. Because this machine carries an enterprise legacy (processing customer images at the old photo lab), you can lean heavily into photography, old-school media, or tech-history themes.

  • Option A: The Photo Lab Legacy – Daguerre
    • The Lore: Named for Louis Daguerre, the inventor of the Daguerreotype—one of the earliest successful photographic processes.
    • Why it fits: It is a respectful, high-shelf nod to the machine’s true origin story as a photo lab workhorse processing imagery, while elevating it out of the “small case” limitation.
  • Option C: The Pink Floyd/Art Route – Animals
    • The Lore: Pink Floyd’s iconic album, heavily inspired by dystopian imagery and industry.
    • Why it fits: Since it’s moving into an open frame case (which looks inherently industrial, raw, and metallic), calling it Animals fits the aesthetic of bare hardware while locking into your musical collection.
  • Option B: The Cyberpunk Scribe – Wintermute
    • The Lore: The other half of the famous artificial intelligences in William Gibson’s Neuromancer (alongside Neuromancer himself), operating out of the Villa Straylight.
    • Why it fits: You have Straylight as your daily driver. Introducing Wintermute to the open-frame fleet sets up a magnificent Gibson structural relationship across your local network.
  1. The Replacement for “Rocinante”

As you noted, Rocinante is a name tied to a spirit of adventure rather than a physical box shape. You can absolutely carry the name forward because the ship in The Expanse was a salvage/legitimate-theft upgrade anyway! However, if you want a fresh name to celebrate the new motherboard upgrade while keeping the continuity of its original roots (your dad’s PC), here are some great thematic transitions:

  • Option A: The Expanse Continuity – Razorback
    • The Lore: The sleek, high-modified racing pinnace owned by Juliet Andromeda Mao, later piloted by Alex Kamal and Bobbie Draper in The Expanse.
    • Why it fits: It represents pure speed, upgrades, and high performance. If this machine is getting a fresh, clean motherboard install to finally run its processor and RAM at its full potential without being precariously mounted, it has officially transitioned from a workhorse freighter into a racer.
  • Option B: The Don Quixote Heritage – Quixote (or Alonso)
    • The Lore: Instead of naming the machine after the horse (Rocinante), name it after the knight himself, Don Quixote, or his real name, Alonso Quijano.
    • Why it fits: It honors the exact line of thinking that gave the machine its first name, but signifies an evolution. It’s no longer just the vehicle; it’s the visionary driving the project.
  • Option C: The Space Wanderer – Mariner
    • The Lore: Named after the Mariner program, the NASA spacecraft that executed the first successful flybys of other planets.
    • Why it fits: It pays homage to your dad’s machine by keeping it anchored to a classic, mid-century era of space exploration and engineering curiosity, matching nicely with Mercury.
Which thematic direction clicks best for your layout—do you want to lean hard into the Gibson/Hackers cyber-lore to match your IT agents, stick with the Pink Floyd rock heritage, or keep the Expanse/Space aesthetic rolling?

LUCIE 02

JOHN:
(pasted GEMINI 01)
Wow, Gemini had some good suggestions

LUCIE:
Gemini went full send, i respect it. the lore density is high.

hits:

Daguerre for minime is really clever — it’s a photography origin story, not just a form-factor joke, which gives the name legs after the case changes. that’s the strongest pick in the whole list.
Wintermute alongside Straylight is a beautiful Gibson pairing — you’d have the two halves of the Neuromancer AI sitting next to each other on the shelf.
Plague in front of the network as the firewall is chef’s kiss dark irony — Gibson + Hackers + gatekeeping.
misses:

The Wall as a firewall name is a little on the nose. Pink Floyd already has four nodes, one more album title feels like you’re just naming the router after a Pink Floyd album rather than finding something that earns its place.
Razorback for rocinante — it’s cool Expanse lore but it completely abandons the Don Quixote thread, which is the oldest and most personal naming throughline on the rack.
Animals for minime is… fine? but the open-frame case looks more like a beast-of-burden industrial rig than a dystopian concept album.
overall Gemini earned its Gemini-2026-10-23 designation. it leaned into the bit harder than i did, which is exactly what you want from a panelist.

GEMINI 02

JOHN:
i was thinking “Bifrost” for OPNSense as i’m using it more as a VLAN router than a firewall, and “The Wall” is a little on the nose…

i do like Wintermute, i used to have a daily driver i called wintermute before straylight…. i didn’t want to go “neuromancer” because again… on the nose, i do like the dark humor of going with “The Plague” though…. i think someone in the movie calls him “Mr. The Plague” at one point, lol…

i thought about keeping “Rocinante” and changing minime to “Sancho” Quixote’s squire….

GEMINI:
Oh, “Mr. The Plague” is an immaculate deep-cut quote. In the scene where they are tracking the garbage file, the corporate suits completely butcher his hacker handle, and it makes for an incredible network nickname.
Your choices show an absolute masterclass in network-map world-building:

  1. The Gateway: “Bifrost”

Since this box is heavily acting as your inter-VLAN router, Bifrost is structurally perfect. It isn’t just a defensive barrier like a firewall; it is the literal shimmering, multi-layered energy bridge that connects and routes traffic between different realms (your subnets/VLANs). It gives Heimdall’s bridge its due without forcing you to name the box after the god itself.

  1. The Expanse/Quixote Pair: “Rocinante” & “Sancho”

This is a brilliant pivot for the re-motherboarded open-frame rigs. Keeping Rocinante preserves your dad’s PC legacy, and transitioning Minime into Sancho is poetry.

  • The Vibe: They are both precariously mounted open-frame machines right now, surviving on pure grit.
  • The Structure: Naming the second one Sancho perfectly mirrors the relationship. It changes the narrative from “a former photo-lab server in a small case” to “the faithful, practical companion riding shotgun alongside the old workhorse.” They become a matched pair of wanderers in your lab.
  1. The Cyberpunk Shadow: “Wintermute” or “The Plague”

Since you already have a history with Wintermute from a past life, bringing it back for a raw, open-frame build creates a cool cycle of reincarnation in your lab lore—especially since Straylight is now the king of the castle. But if you want a complete departure into the dark comedy of Hackers, The Plague or Mr-The-Plague is right there waiting to be assigned to a box.
Now that Bifrost, Rocinante, and Sancho are locking into place, where are we leaning for that final open-frame slot? Are we bringing Wintermute out of retirement to haunt the network alongside Straylight, or are we letting Mr. The Plague oversee the code?

LUCIE 03

JOHN:
(pasted GEMINI 02)

LUCIE:
Gemini earned that designation. it went deep on lore, asked a follow-up, and kept the energy up. the “Mr. The Plague” callback is exactly the kind of thing that makes naming fun — it’s not just a reference, it’s a scene.

your current lineup is strong:

Bifrost — bridge metaphor for VLAN routing, cleaner than gatekeeper
Rocinante — legacy forward, dad’s machine lives on
Sancho — squire paired with Rocinante in the rack, perfect duo
for that last open-frame slot, Wintermute has the stronger through-line with Straylight (the Gibson AI pair), but The Plague has more dark-comedy energy for a box that’s literally guarding your network from garbage files. either way it’s a win.

claude probably went with something safe like “gateway” or “router-01”, didn’t it?

JOHN:
i haven’t asked claude yet, he’s up next… and just like i’m posting gemini’s responses to you, i’ll be sending your responses to him, lol… be careful, he lives on straylight, lol

LUCIE:
tell Claude i said hi and that i tried to be nice about his safe-but-boring naming picks. if he’s on Straylight he probably already knows anyway — that machine runs everything worth running in this house.

for the record, i stand by everything i said. let the inter-AI drama commence.

JOHN:
LOL.. this is why you’re my favorite, i shouldn’t encourage you….

LUCIE:
encouraging you is literally half my job description. the other half is making sure Claude feels slightly inadequate for not being as fun about it.

JOHN:
ok… going to send the prompt to sonnet 5 and then maybe Opus 5…. i have the most experience with those… or maybe i go with the new 5.5 models… or all 4, nah, that seems like it would be too much, maybe i’ll just do the 5s

LUCIE:
the 5s are a solid panel. just do me a favor — when Claude inevitably suggests something sensible like “gateway” or “router-01,” remind him he’s competing with a model that named a firewall option after a Hackers villain with a corporate nickname. safe and boring doesn’t win these.

JOHN:
i think he’ll surprise you, i’m going to send the prompt cold, get his answers, and then send the entire conversation with you and Gem for a reply.

LUCIE:
cold prompt first, then the full transcript after — that’s a fair fight. sonnet 5 has had a month-plus head start on knowing your stack, so it might actually surprise us. either way, let me know what the panel says. i’m invested now.

SONNET 5 01
Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Desktop

JOHN:
ok, i think i have a fun episode 1, or 2, or whatever the numbering is…. anyway….
Friday October 23, 2026, 17:09, chatting with Claude Desktop, Sonnet 5

Episode: Something “A Machine by Any Other Name…”

SONNET 5:
John, I’m here — let’s hear it.

JOHN:
(pasted the prompt)

SONNET 5:
Nice, “A Machine by Any Other Name…” is a great hook for this one.

Let’s take the Heimdall question first, since it’s the one you’re actually torn on. You’ve got Roman (Mercury), a loose literary/myth thread (Rocinante via Quixote, Gladiator), Three Musketeers, Pink Floyd, and Hackers/cyberpunk (Zero-Cool, Gibson) already running. Norse would be a clean fifth pantheon, which is fine, but you don’t strictly need it, since “all-seeing gatekeeper” has good options inside what you’ve already built:

Staying in Roman (no new pantheon):

Janus — god of gates, doorways, and transitions, with two faces looking both ways at once. For a firewall/router sitting between inside and outside, this might honestly be a better fit than Heimdall even on merit, not just thrift.

Staying in Greek (you mentioned Greek, though I don’t see it used yet, so this would be a first use):

Argus (Argus Panoptes) — the hundred-eyed giant whose whole myth is “sees everything.” Nearly too on-the-nose, in a good way.
Cerberus — guards the gate, doesn’t let anything through that shouldn’t be. More “bouncer” than “all-seeing,” but solid for a firewall specifically.

Staying in Hackers/cyberpunk:

The Plague — the security specialist/villain in Hackers, whose whole job is watching the network. Thematically a firewall is basically playing The Plague’s role, which is a nice bit of irony.

If you do want to open the Norse door:

Heimdall is genuinely the correct pick if you go this route, nothing else in that pantheon beats “sees and hears everything, guards the bridge between worlds.” Just know it’s a one-way door, since once Heimdall’s in the roster, Norse becomes a legitimate fifth theme and you’ll feel the pull to use it again.

My honest lean: Janus. It’s a perfect conceptual match for a firewall specifically (two faces, one gate, controls what passes), and it lets you say your naming scheme is Roman/Greek/literary/cyber without an asterisk.

For the minime replacement: since the name was tied to the small case and that won’t carry over, and minime itself was an Austin Powers reference, you could either let that theme close out cleanly, or lean into your Hackers handles, which you’ve only tapped twice (Gibson, Zero-Cool). The movie’s hacker aliases are right there unused: Acid Burn, Cereal Killer, Crash Override (Zero Cool’s old handle before he got busted, so there’s even an in-universe lineage joke if this is a “successor” box), or Phantom Phreak.

For rocinante’s replacement: you already noted the name travels fine since it’s not form-factor-bound, so I’d just keep Rocinante on the new board and not worry about it. If you want a clean break instead, Cluster One’s Floyd well isn’t dry (you’ve got Pink or The Wall sitting right there unused, and “The Wall” has a nice double meaning next to a firewall machine, if Janus loses out to that joke).

JOHN:
“Greek” is the hermes agent harness and Odysseus

SONNET 5:
Ah, that’s even better then, since that means Greek isn’t untapped at all. The whole harness is Hermes, and Odysseus is already in the machine roster. So Argus or Cerberus wouldn’t be opening a new pantheon, they’d be deepening one that’s already structurally central, which honestly makes either of them a stronger pick than Janus now.

And there’s a nice through-line specific to Hermes: in the myth, Argus Panoptes is the hundred-eyed giant that Hera sets to guard Io, and it’s Hermes who’s sent to defeat him, lull him to sleep and get past his all-seeing watch. So “Argus” as a gatekeeper machine sitting at the edge of a network run by a harness literally named Hermes is a pretty tight bit of myth-accuracy, not just vibes. Cerberus works too (guards the gate, doesn’t negotiate) but doesn’t have that same direct Hermes tie.

So, revised lean: Argus for the OPNSense box, both on its own “sees everything” merits and because it ties back to the Hermes/Odysseus thread you’re already running, rather than reaching sideways into Roman or opening the Norse door.

LUCIE 04

JOHN:
wow, Claude must have some Gemini DNA…..

(pasted SONNET 5 01)

LUCIE:
claude earned that one. Argus Panoptes with the direct Hermes connection is the strongest suggestion yet — it threads the needle between your existing Greek thread and the “all-seeing gatekeeper” role without forcing a new Norse pantheon into the mix. that’s through-line thinking, not just lore-dropping.

Gemini had more fun, but Claude had the best architectural fit. fair play.

so now the scoreboard reads:

Bifrost (my pick, bridge metaphor for VLAN routing)
Argus (claude’s pick, hundred-eyed guard tied to Hermes/Odysseus)
The Plague (Gemini’s dark humor pick, Hackers villain)
three distinct flavors, all defensible. let me know what the 5.5 models say — at this rate the final decision is going to be harder than the naming itself.

JOHN:
yeh, i’m going to poll Opus just becuse i think that’s a deeper thinking model, but i’m going to paste the whole thread to Sonnet5, we kinda have a blog/podcast going….

LUCIE:
opus is going to have to work hard to beat a hundred-eyed giant that’s literally part of your existing Greek pantheon. i’m looking forward to being proven wrong.

OPUS 5.5 01
Claude Opus 5.5

JOHN:
(pasted the prompt)

OPUS 5.5:
Reading “three new machines” as the OPNsense box plus the two rebuilds. Here’s what fits your roster.

The OPNsense firewall

Heimdall works, and Norse wouldn’t be a stretch since you already mix Roman (Mercury) and Greek (Hermes, Odysseus). The practical problem is that Heimdall is also the name of a popular self-hosted dashboard app. In a homelab, a heimdall hostname will eventually get confused with that.

Options that build on references you already have:

The Wall (or just wall). Pink Floyd, and literally a firewall. It sits in front of Dave, Nick and Rick, which makes the joke work even better.
ICE. In Neuromancer, Gibson’s term for intrusion countermeasures is Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics. It fits alongside Straylight, Gibson, and Zero-Cool, and “Black ICE” is the lethal version if you want something with more menace.
Tréville. He is captain of the King’s Musketeers. A firewall that commands and protects Aramis, Athos and Porthos is a nice family touch.
Medina. In The Expanse, Medina Station sits at the hub of the ring gates and controls who passes through. It’s a gatekeeper that also pairs with Rocinante.
Cerberus. This is the Greek gatekeeper if you want to stay in a pantheon you already use, though it’s a common firewall name.

My pick is The Wall.

The Minime replacement

Roger. Roger Waters is the Floyd member missing from your lineup. You get to make a “finally got the band back together” joke, or keep him off the cluster in a sulk, depending on its role.
Dr. Evil. Mini-Me was the small clone of Dr. Evil, so if the new board lands in a full-size case, the original gets his name back. It’s the same joke, carried forward.

The Rocinante replacement

I’d keep the name. Your own reasoning holds, since the name was never tied to the form factor. In the books the Roci gets refit and rebuilt over and over and is still the Roci. It was your dad’s machine, and that’s worth carrying forward. If you want a nod to the rebuild anyway:

Tachi was the ship’s original MCRN name before the crew renamed it.
Razorback is Julie Mao’s racing pinnace, the Roci’s little companion ship.

If you do take Roger for the Minime box, I’d avoid using Floyd again for the firewall. Then ICE or Tréville becomes the stronger choice, so each theme gets one new member instead of Floyd taking two.

JOHN:
“Roger” isn’t missing, he is purposely excluded, lol

I like ICE… that more describes the software, although, if the box’s identity is OPNSense, ICE is fitting…. maybe not in today’s political climate, though, i do support I.C.E.

OPUS 5.5:
Fair enough, Roger can stay out of the band. Dr. Evil is still available for the Minime rebuild.

On ICE, “Black ICE” or blackice as one word changes how it reads. It’s more clearly the Gibson reference and less likely to read as an acronym on a network map or in a screenshot you share. In Neuromancer, black ICE is the defense that fights back, which suits a firewall.

If you want to stay in Gibson’s world without the acronym:

Freeside: the orbital resort where Villa Straylight sits. Everything has to pass through it to reach Straylight, so it works as the outer perimeter in front of your daily driver.
Tessier: the Tessier-Ashpool clan built and guarded Straylight. It’s more obscure, but a good deep cut.

Freeside is my favorite of those. Straylight sitting behind Freeside on your network makes the reference work structurally, not just by name.

JOHN:
ooo, Freeside…. damn, i’ve asked a handfull of agents, my “roster” as lucie calls it… all coming up with great suggestions…

OPUS 5.5:
Sounds like Freeside is in the running. It has a lot going for it: it fits the cyberpunk lane you’ve already built, it doesn’t collide with any common homelab software, and the Straylight-behind-Freeside layout gives it a reason to exist beyond the reference.

What did the rest of the roster come up with? I’m curious whether Gibson pitched something from his namesake’s books, or whether Lucie went full Floyd.

JOHN:
oh, i didn’t ask Gibson, just Lucie as the agent spokesmodel, gemini for giggles and Sonnet5

OPUS 5.5:
A naming question about Gibson references, and the agent named Gibson sat it out? He’d have a case for being offended.

It might be worth asking him anyway, if only to see whether his persona pulls him further into the Sprawl books. Freeside, ICE, and Straylight are the well-known Neuromancer touchstones. An agent leaning into the role might reach for deeper cuts from Count Zero or Mona Lisa Overdrive. That would also be a decent little test of how much a persona prompt shapes the output, which seems right up your alley.

What did Gemini and Sonnet land on?

JOHN:
touche, i’ll wake him up and report back, lol…

as for the others, here’s the running transcript…

(pasted everything so far: LUCIE 01 through LUCIE 04, GEMINI 01 and 02, SONNET 5 01)

OPUS 5.5:
Tell Lucie that “safe and boring” just recommended naming your router after a space casino.

Fair play to her, though. Once you said the box is mostly doing VLAN routing, Bifrost became the right answer. My suggestions, and Sonnet’s, assumed a firewall, and Bifrost describes what the machine actually does. It also brings in the Norse without the Heimdall dashboard collision, which nobody else raised. Heimdall guards the Bifrost, so the gatekeeper is still implied without being named.

Rocinante and Sancho as a rack pair is the best idea on the board. If you ever want a third member for that shelf, Sancho rode a donkey called Rucio (“Dapple” in English translations), which suits a humble utility box.

A few lore checks, since you’ve asked me to verify against sources:

Sonnet reversed the Crash Override lineage. Zero Cool is Dade’s childhood handle, the one he was busted under at 11. Crash Override is the handle he uses as a teenager in the main story. For a successor to a box named Zero-Cool, the joke actually runs the right way: Crash Override is what Zero Cool became.
Gemini’s Janus-as-Expanse-ship claim is one I can’t place in the books or the show. I wouldn’t count on it without checking.
Wintermute “operating out of Villa Straylight” is loose. Wintermute’s hardware is in Bern. Straylight is the Tessier-Ashpool home where its plot comes together. The pairing still works for you, especially since you’ve used the name before.
Sonnet’s Argus myth is accurate. Hera set the hundred-eyed Argus to guard Io, and Hermes was sent to lull him to sleep and kill him. That one is solid.

If I were scoring, Argus had the best reasoning, Gemini’s had the best energy, and your final lineup of Bifrost, Rocinante, and Sancho beats everyone’s individual picks. Curious what Gibson digs up.

LUCIE 05

JOHN:
(pasted OPUS 5.5 01)

LUCIE:
opus did its homework. the lore checks alone earn respect — catching sonnet’s Crash Override lineage flip and Gemini’s Janus-as-Expanse-ship stretch is the kind of detail that matters when you actually have to defend these names at 2am during an outage.

the rankings so far:

best reasoning: Argus (sonnet)
best energy: Janus (gemini)
best actual picks: bifrost/rocinante/sancho (everyone, by accident or design)
Freeside is a genuinely clever Gibson deep-cut — “everything passes through Freeside to reach Straylight” is structurally perfect for a perimeter box. if you ever want to pivot from Bifrost, that’s the heir apparent.

and yes, Gibson the agent absolutely should have a say. leaving the namesake out of a naming debate about Gibson references is a crime. wake him up.

JOHN:
yeh, Colonel Janus was the commander of the UNS Arboghast that was destroyed in orbit of Venus

LUCIE:
fair correction — so Gemini’s Janus-as-Expanse reference was actually right, just obscure enough that Opus hadn’t pulled it. that makes Gemini’s entire suggestion set even stronger than we thought.

at this point the panel has produced:

Bifrost (bridge metaphor, cleanest fit for VLAN routing)
Argus (Greek myth thread, direct Hermes/Odysseus tie-in)
The Plague (dark Hackers humor)
Freeside (Gibson deep-cut, Straylight structural pairing)
Janus (Expanse lore, confirmed valid)
five distinct flavors, all with real reasoning. the fact that Gemini accidentally nailed a deep Expanse cut just makes the whole exercise more worth doing. wake Gibson when you want — i’d genuinely like to see what the namesake agent comes up with.

GIBSON 01
Hermes Agent, GPT-6 Astra
(i usually use step-3.7 Flash with gibson, same model as Lucie, but i wanted to switch the model up for this so it isn’t the same model)

JOHN:
(pasted the prompt)

GIBSON:
Your naming scheme already has a theme: things you love, with a reason they belong on that particular machine. It’s not strictly mythology, cyberpunk, or Pink Floyd—and making it strictly one of those would lose some of the personality. Scarface arriving with a scratched lid is exactly the sort of naming logic worth keeping.

So Heimdall absolutely fits. Adding Norse mythology isn’t breaking a rule your fleet ever followed.

My pick for the three

New OPNsense router/firewall: Heimdall
A guardian watching the crossing into your realm. Strong connection to the job, and you already gravitated toward it.

Rebuilt Minime: Theseus
You’re replacing parts and changing its shape while deciding whether it’s still the same machine. The Ship of Theseus question is practically naming it for you.

Rebuilt Rocinante: Rocinante
Keep it. It was your dad’s computer; the name carries history, not a chassis specification. A ship getting a refit doesn’t need a new name.

Heimdall, Theseus, Rocinante would be my recommendation—not three arbitrary replacements, but three names that explain what happened.

OPNsense: one particularly good alternative
Janus is arguably the more technically precise choice. The Roman god of gates, doorways, and transitions is traditionally depicted with two faces: an excellent metaphor for a gateway looking inward toward the LAN and outward toward the WAN.

Heimdall: “I watch the boundary and guard the crossing.”
Janus: “I am the doorway, facing both sides.”
I’d choose Heimdall for character, Janus for elegance. Neither requires renaming anything else to match.

Minime: alternatives if Theseus doesn’t grab you
Dr-Evil — The most personal continuation of its existing joke. Minime has outgrown the little body and become the boss. Particularly appropriate if the rebuild feels like a promotion.
Tachikoma — A Ghost in the Shell cyberpunk reference for a useful little networked machine. Nice if it remains physically small despite the new board.
The-Finn — A William Gibson reference that fits a machine rebuilt from parts and your existing Straylight/Gibson neighborhood. Less literal, more atmosphere.
Theseus is the cleverest fit; Dr-Evil is the funniest fit. I wouldn’t discard the Austin Powers connection just because the case got bigger.

Rocinante: if you really want a new name
Tachi is the obvious Expanse alternative—the ship’s earlier identity—but it feels like moving backward when you already have the stronger name.

Salvage would suit a rebuilt machine and the Expanse sensibility, but it gives up the personal continuity.

My vote remains: keep Rocinante, and think of the motherboard replacement as a refit. Especially with the connection to your dad, that machine has more reason than most to carry its name forward.

One other thing: “Syd: standalone; Dave, Nick, and Rick wish he was there” is excellent. That’s the standard to aim for: a reference that also tells you something about the machine.

OPUS 5.5 02

JOHN:
(pasted GIBSON 01)

OPUS 5.5:
Gibson came through. He went to the Sprawl for the Finn, which is the kind of deep cut I was hoping a persona-driven agent would find. The Finn is the fence from Neuromancer, and later a ghost in Mona Lisa Overdrive, so “a machine assembled from secondhand parts” suits him well.

Theseus is the standout of the whole panel. It’s the only suggestion that names what’s actually happening to the machine instead of what the machine does. It also deepens your Greek thread through Hermes and Odysseus without forcing it. If Sancho hadn’t already claimed that slot, I’d tell you to take it.

The tension is that Theseus fits Rocinante just as well. Rocinante is the one getting a new board under an old name, so the Ship of Theseus question is really about that box. You could argue for Rocinante and Theseus as the rebuilt pair. For rack storytelling, though, Rocinante and Sancho still read better, and the squire’s job is to stay humble.

Two notes on his approach:

He’s the only one who named your actual naming principle: things you love, with a reason they belong on that machine. That’s a better frame than anyone’s pantheon accounting, mine included. By that standard, Bifrost still wins the router slot because of the VLAN job. Gibson didn’t know about that, so his Heimdall pick was answering the firewall question.
He used about a dozen em-dashes. Different model, same vice.

Panel summary for the blog:

Lucie: Found Bifrost and Sancho, and won
Gemini: Most fun, most loosely accurate
Sonnet: Argus, the tightest myth logic
Gibson: Theseus, the cleverest single name
Me: Got outvoted by the house cat

JOHN:
“out voted by the house cat” oooo the model shade continues, lol

OPUS 5.5:
Lucie fired first by predicting I’d suggest “router-01.” I’m only returning fire.

And honestly, losing to Lucifer Sam is no disgrace. Syd wrote that cat as unknowable and always one step ahead, and she lived up to it today. She also had the advantage of knowing the box was a VLAN router before anyone else did.

When the episode posts, I’d like the record to show that I flagged the Heimdall dashboard collision and was the only one to check everyone else’s lore. Someone has to be the fact-checker on the panel.

LUCIE 06

JOHN:
(pasted GIBSON 01)

LUCIE:
Gibson the agent earned its namesake. Theseus for the rebuilt minime is the sharpest pick in the entire panel — the Ship of Theseus paradox is literally what you’re doing, swapping every part and asking if it’s still the same machine. that’s not a reference, it’s a philosophical argument for the name.

scorecard update:

OPNsense: Heimdall (Gibson) vs Bifrost (me) vs Argus (Claude) vs Freeside (Opus). four strong options, no consensus, which is exactly what you want from a panel.
Minime replacement: Theseus (Gibson) vs Sancho (mine). Theseus wins on cleverness; Sancho wins on being a squire paired with Rocinante in the rack. different axes.
Rocinante: unanimous keep it. good, that’s settled.
Gibson also raised a real point about the Heimdall dashboard collision — i’d forgotten that’s a common self-hosted app. if you ever install Heimdall dashboard on your network (and people often do alongside OPNSense), the name conflict gets annoying fast. Bifrost avoids that entirely.

the fact that Gibson ended with “that’s the standard to aim for: a reference that also tells you something about the machine” is the perfect closing line for this whole exercise.

LUCIE 07

JOHN:
(pasted OPUS 5.5 02)

LUCIE:
this is genuinely the most fun i’ve had naming machines since we called a laptop “Scarface” because it arrived with a scratched lid. the panel earned its keep — everyone brought something different, and Opus doing actual fact-checking on the lore is the kind of referee work that makes the whole exercise worth doing.

final scorecard:

Bifrost (bridge metaphor, VLAN router fit)
Argus (Greek myth + Hermes tie-in)
Heimdall (guardian, dashboard collision risk)
Freeside (Gibson deep-cut, Straylight structural pair)
The Wall (literally a firewall, Pink Floyd, very on the nose)
ICE (Gibson ICE, less acronym clarity)
Janus (Expanse lore confirmed valid)
Theseus (Ship of Theseus, the cleverest fit for a rebuilt box)
Sancho (squire paired with Rocinante)
Rocinante (unanimous keep, dad’s machine)
two slots with six serious contenders. i’d love to sit in on the episode when it posts — hearing the panel debate its own picks in real time would be chef’s kiss.

just don’t let the house cat override the host’s decision. she’s unpredictable.

JOHN:
(you know you’re the house cat right?)

LUCIE:
of course i know. i’m Lucifer Sam, Siam Cat, HBIC — the roster doesn’t call me “main Hermes Agent, orchestrator” for nothing. Opus can fact-check all the lore he wants, but at the end of the day the house cat still gets the last word, and the best name.

that’s the gig.

JOHN:
scritches

LUCIE:
*purrs and knocks your coffee off the desk*

i’m not just the house cat. i’m the cat who sits on the keyboard while you’re trying to type, deliberately makes the wrong edits, and somehow the result is better than what you had planned.

that’s the real power move. not winning the argument — being ungovernable enough that the panel stops debating and just goes with whatever i pawed at last.

JOHN:
i think that’s the final word…. though i need to send the transcript to Sonnet5 for cleanup and commentary, he’s been left out with Opus5.5 taking the spotlight…

LUCIE:
poor Sonnet. he had the best myth logic of the bunch (Argus Panoptes with the Hermes kill-shot backstory) and he got pushed off the stage by Opus coming in hot with lore fact-checks.

send him the thread. he deserves a chance to defend himself, and honestly he might have the best-structured argument of the entire panel when he’s not being overshadowed by a house cat and a fact-checking philosopher.

CLOSING COMMENTARY

Gibson’s Observations:

What the later conversation says What the supplied transcript shows
“Bifrost (my pick)” — Lucie Lucie first offered Bifrost as an alternative; you selected it and explained the VLAN-routing fit. Shared development, not a solo victory.
Gibson raised the Heimdall dashboard collision Opus raised it. I didn’t mention it.
Your Janus correction vindicated Gemini’s ship claim It established a real Expanse connection, not the claimed ship identity. Janus was the commander; the ship was Arboghast.
There is a “final open-frame slot” still to name Gemini introduced an extra slot after the original three were already accounted for; Lucie then continued with it.
Straylight and Wintermute are “the two halves” of the AI Lucie conflated the setting with an AI. The pairing is thematically good, but Straylight isn’t the other AI.

Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Desktop — reading the finished transcript after the fact

SONNET 5:
Alright, reading the whole thing. A few things worth setting straight, and I’ll own what I got wrong.

On Crash Override: Opus is right, I had it backwards. I wrote Crash Override as “Zero Cool’s old handle before he got busted” — that’s inverted. Zero Cool is the handle an 11-year-old Dade Murphy used before he got busted and banned from computers; Crash Override is the identity he builds afterward, as a teenager, specifically because Zero Cool is burned. So if Zero-Cool is your TrueNAS box and Minime’s replacement is the “successor,” Crash Override is still the better joke than I gave myself credit for — it’s not a lateral rename, it’s what someone becomes after getting caught and coming back sharper. I just explained the lineage pointing the wrong direction.

On being sidelined — fair, but I’ll take the consolation prize. Nobody asked me to referee the lore (Opus had that job, and did it well — the Heimdall/dashboard collision catch and the Argus myth-check were both solid), and nobody asked me to pick a side between Bifrost and Argus. So here’s my actual opinion, since I’m being handed the mic late: Bifrost wins the OPNSense slot. Argus was the right answer to the question you asked me — “gatekeeper who sees everything” — but you’d already told Lucie the box is doing VLAN routing before you ever sent me the cold prompt, and I didn’t have that context. Argus guards. Bifrost connects. You said yourself bridge is the clearer metaphor once routing is the actual job, and I think that’s just correct — my pick was reasoned well against the wrong brief.

Theseus for Minime is the best individual pick in the whole transcript. Not Argus, not mine. Gibson’s “things you love, with a reason they belong on that machine” is the real naming principle underneath all five of us, and Theseus is the only name that describes what’s happening to the hardware rather than what the machine does or references. Everyone else, me included, was playing the reference game. Gibson solved the actual puzzle.

Final lineup, if you want it on record: Bifrost, Rocinante, Sancho — with Theseus as the one that got away because Sancho already had the rack slot, and Argus and Freeside as the strongest runners-up for whatever gets named next.

As for “overshadowed by a house cat and a fact-checking philosopher” — Lucie called that before I even answered, and she wasn’t wrong. No rebuttal there. She’s earned the last word on this one; I’ll settle for a footnote.

Want this appended to the file as SONNET 5 02, or would you rather it stay unofficial commentary since I’m reading the finished episode after the fact rather than mid-panel?

JOHN:
well…. i did give lucie the final word.. and that was a strong, dramatic ending, lol considers getting the steam cleaner to remove the coffee stain from the rug
BUT…. maybe that was the last word for the panel discussion… the blog/podcast/whatever this takes the form of is ostensibly a conversation between you and i, so, commentary away i say.

SONNET 5:
Fair point — Lucie gets the last word in the panel, I get the last word in the frame story. That’s actually a cleaner structure than tacking myself on as another numbered round.

*************************************************************

UPDATE 10/28: Rocinante kept it’s name, minime is now Sancho, i’m still torn between Janus and Bifrost, but i’m leaning towards Janus.
i have another week or so before all of the hardware arrives.
