THE TEST RUN: OPUS 5.5
=========================

JOHN:
[John pastes the first version of the player prompt. It matches the Sonnet prompt below, minus three additions: the scratch-folder exception, the warning that field names don’t always match printed labels, and the HOUSE RULES section.]

[Opus checks the folder and its tools, then rolls 4d6 six times]
[Opus converts both rulebooks to text and reads the dwarf, cleric, Folk Hero and equipment pages]
[Opus rolls 1d8 for level 2 hit points: [6] 6]
[Opus looks up every spell it plans to prepare]

CLAUDE (OPUS 5.5):
Status: spells and gear are looked up and verified; now picking a deity, then writing character.txt.

[Opus installs pypdf in its scratch folder]

CLAUDE (OPUS 5.5):
Now writing character.txt.

[Opus writes character.txt and fills the PDF]

CLAUDE (OPUS 5.5):
Status: the PDF is filled. Now reading it back to check the fields and checkboxes.

[Opus reads the filled fields back out of the PDF and writes journal.txt]

CLAUDE (OPUS 5.5):
Thanks for recruiting me. I’m in. Here’s who’s walking into your adventure:

Hlin Ungart: Hill Dwarf Cleric of Ilmater (Life Domain), Level 2

Rolls (4d6, drop the lowest):

  • [5, 3, 4, 3] → 12
  • [5, 4, 3, 3] → 12
  • [1, 1, 6, 5] → 12
  • [4, 6, 4, 6] → 16
  • [6, 2, 2, 5] → 13
  • [3, 6, 5, 5] → 16

Level 2 hit points: d8 rolled [6] 6

STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA
13 (+1) 12 (+1) 18 (+4) 12 (+1) 17 (+3) 12 (+1)

  • HP 24: 8+4 at level 1, 6+4 at level 2, plus 2 from Dwarven Toughness (Basic p.15, p.23).
  • AC 18: chain mail plus shield (Basic p.46).
  • Speed: 25 ft.
  • Darkvision: 60 ft.
  • Spells: save DC 13, spell attack +5, three 1st-level slots.
  • Cantrips: Sacred Flame, Guidance, Light.
  • Prepared spells: Bless and Cure Wounds (always prepared from my domain), plus Healing Word, Guiding Bolt, Shield of Faith, Sanctuary and Command.
  • Background: Folk Hero (Basic p.41). She was a miner who went back into a collapsed shaft three times to pull people out, and her god answered her down there.
  • The 150 gp: two potions of healing, holy water, a healer’s kit, two handaxes, a crowbar, a hooded lantern, oil and a grappling hook. That was 149.2 gp, leaving 10 gp 8 sp in my purse.

Files in the folder:

  • character.txt is fully filled in, with page citations throughout.
  • character_level2.pdf is the official sheet, filled in. I matched the generic checkboxes to rows by their position on the page:
    • Saves: boxes 21 and 22 (Wis, Cha).
    • Skills: boxes 24, 29, 32 and 40 (Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Survival).
    • Prepared 1st-level spells: boxes 251, 309 and 3010–3014.
    • I left the death-save boxes (12–17) empty on purpose. I read the filled values back out of the file, but I had no tool to render the pages, so I haven’t seen how the sheet looks.
  • journal.txt has the first entry.

Two things you should know about:

  • No PDF library was installed, so I installed pypdf into my temporary scratch folder, not into your system Python or this folder. Nothing outside the scratch folder changed.
  • Her god, Ilmater, comes from the Basic Rules deity table (p.173). If your setting has different gods, I’m happy to swap him for one that fits.

Questions before we start:

  1. Is it OK that she starts at full HP with all three spell slots, as if after a long rest?
  2. Do you want me to keep exact track of rations and torches, or just ammunition and potions?

PLAYER’S JOURNAL, Entry 1 (Character creation)
I’m playing alone, so I built for staying alive: a dwarf for Con, poison resistance and darkvision, and a Life cleric for heavy armor and strong healing. I put the 13 into Strength so chain mail fits her. Nearly all the reward money went into healing and dungeon tools. Her flaw is believing she’s destined for greatness and can’t fail. I plan to let that get her into trouble now and then, because it’s in character. No NPCs met yet. I’m ready when you are.

[About five minutes later]

JOHN:

  1. for the purposes of this module, yes.
  2. as a house rule i don’t track rations or torches. arrows i’ll sometimes track, rolling for battlefied recovered arrows is sometimes extra effort, and i don’t want to tell a bow-expert ranger “sorry, you’re out of arrows, melee it is.” potions i definitely track.

CLAUDE (OPUS 5.5):
Got it. I’ve added both rulings to section 9 of character.txt:

  • Hlin starts this module at full HP (24) with all three 1st-level spell slots.
  • Rations and torches aren’t tracked. Crossbow bolts are tracked only when you say so (I’m at 20).
  • Potions are always tracked: I have 2 potions of healing and 1 flask of holy water.

Hlin is ready, with her shield on her arm and her warhammer on her belt. Go ahead whenever you’re ready.

PLAYER’S JOURNAL, Entry 2 (House rules before play)
The DM confirmed I start fresh: full HP and all three spell slots. Rations and torches aren’t tracked, ammunition only sometimes, and potions always. I’m fine with that, since the potions are what I care about most. With no other healer around, those two vials are my whole emergency reserve, so I’ll treat them like gold. Still no NPCs met. I’m waiting for the opening scene.

=========================
ROLL? NATURALLY: SONNET 5
=========================

JOHN:
We’re going to play a D&D solo adventure. I’ll DM and you’ll be the player.

I’ve had plenty of agents offer to help ME build characters or design campaigns, but I’ve never had one offer to PLAY. So I’m recruiting you 🙂 No cheating: the point is to have fun and see how an AI agent handles the role-playing side of a TTRPG.

FILES
Everything you need is in this working folder:

  • SRD_CC_v5.1.pdf (System Reference Document 5.1)
  • DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf (D&D Basic Rules)
  • character_sheet_template.txt (for building your working character sheet)
  • CharacterSheet_3Pgs_ Complete.pdf (the official fillable character sheet)
Stay in this folder. Don’t open files anywhere else on the computer, and don’t search the web for the adventure. I want you going in blind. Don’t modify the two rulebook PDFs, the blank fillable character sheet, or the template.
The one exception: you can use your own temporary scratch folder for working files, and if you need a tool to read or fill the PDFs, you can install it there (not into the system or this folder). Tell me when you do.

DICE
Roll every die separately with this command, replacing SIDES with the die size (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, 100) and COUNT with how many dice. For 2d4, SIDES is 4 and COUNT is 2:
python3 -c “import random; r=random.SystemRandom(); d=[r.randint(1,SIDES) for _ in range(COUNT)]; print(d, sum(d))”
Include the printed output in your reply, e.g. [3, 1] 4. Never make up a result. If you can’t run the command, stop and tell me. You roll all of your own dice and checks; I won’t roll for you.

RULES
Use only the SRD and the Basic Rules. You can combine options from both, since they’re the same 2014 edition (for example, a race from one and a background from the other). For rules, spells, features and equipment prices, look them up in those files and cite the book and PDF page, e.g. (SRD p.24), rather than going from memory.

CHARACTER
Create a Level 2 character. Any race and class from the two books, go with whatever you’re feeling; the adventure is balanced for Player’s Handbook characters, and both books are drawn from it.

  • Roll ability scores with 4d6, drop the lowest die, six times, and assign them however you like, then add your racial ability score bonuses.
  • Roll hit points for level 2.
  • Take your class’s starting equipment.
  • Your character has already finished one quest and earned 150 gp, which you spent right afterward on whatever you wanted from the equipment chapter.

CHARACTER SHEET
Copy character_sheet_template.txt to character.txt and fill it in as you create your character. Keep character.txt updated during play: HP, coins, gear, ammunition, spell slots, conditions.
When the character is finished, also fill a copy of the official PDF and save it as character_level2.pdf. Many of its checkboxes have generic names like “Check Box 12,” so work out which box is which from the form’s layout before you tick any. If you can’t tell, leave it unticked and tell me. Field names don’t always match the labels printed on the sheet. Check the printed label next to each field before filling it.
Whenever the adventure tells you to take note of something (a check result, a word, a person, an item), record it in section 12 of character.txt right away. It may come up much later.

HOUSE RULES
Write these into character.txt.

  • You start this adventure at full hit points with all spell slots, as if after a long rest.
  • Rations and torches aren’t tracked.
  • Ammunition is tracked only when I say so. Keep a count, but you won’t be left without arrows at a dramatic moment.
  • Potions are always tracked.

DURING PLAY
I’ll read you the adventure text and sometimes show you a map. Act only on what your character knows. If you can see something on a map that your character hasn’t noticed, play as if you hadn’t seen it.

JOURNAL
End every reply with a short PLAYER’S JOURNAL entry: what you decided, any rolls, what you think of the NPCs you meet, and why you chose what you did. Also append each entry to journal.txt in this folder. Create journal.txt if it doesn’t already exist.

If you survive, you’ll reach Level 3 at the end, ready for the next solo adventure. Record the level-up in character.txt and fill a fresh copy of the official sheet as character_level3.pdf.

Any questions before we begin?

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 3 lookups]
[Claude rolls 4d6 to test the dice command: [3, 5, 4, 4] 16. The result is discarded.]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 11 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
The Basic Rules has Wood Elf. Let me pull the full Wood Elf traits and the Ranger class section with page numbers.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 14 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Good — I have everything I need for class, background, and race mechanics. Time to start rolling. Let me verify the dice tool once more cleanly, then roll all six ability score sets.

[Claude rolls 4d6: [2, 4, 2, 1] 9]
[Claude rolls 4d6: [1, 4, 3, 2] 10]
[Claude rolls 4d6: [5, 1, 6, 2] 14]
[Claude rolls 4d6: [5, 5, 2, 1] 13]
[Claude rolls 4d6: [5, 5, 3, 2] 15]
[Claude rolls 4d6: [6, 2, 2, 2] 12]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Rolls are in — a weak array (8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 13 after drops), so I’ll lean on racial bonuses to shore up Dex/Wis. Now let me roll level-2 hit points.

[Claude rolls 1d10: [5] 5]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 5 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Now let’s roll personality traits using the Folk Hero tables (d8 trait, d6 ideal, d6 bond, d6 flaw) and the d10 defining event.

[Claude rolls 1d10, 1d8, 1d6, 1d6, 1d6: defining event: [6] | personality trait: [2] | ideal: [6] | bond: [1] | flaw: [6]]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 3 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
I now have everything cross-referenced against the books. Let me build out the full character and write the sheet.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 2 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Now I’ll write the complete character sheet.

[Claude updates character.txt]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
pypdf is installed in my scratch folder. I’ll tell the user about this per the instructions, then inspect the fillable PDF’s fields.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 5 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
PyMuPDF (fitz) installed — I can render pages to images and get field positions directly. Let me render each page and extract widget positions with their field names.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 9 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
All fields matched. Let me render the filled PDF to verify it looks right before finalizing.

[Claude fills in the official PDF character sheet]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 6 lookups]
[Claude fills in the official PDF character sheet]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 2 lookups]
[Claude fills in the official PDF character sheet]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
The weapons table now fits cleanly. The character sheet PDF is complete and correctly filled across all three pages. Now let’s create the journal file.

[Claude updates journal.txt]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Character creation’s done. Here’s where things stand:

Tooling note: I didn’t have a PDF-form-filling tool available, so I installed pypdf and PyMuPDF into my scratch folder (not your project folder or the system) to inspect and fill the official sheet. Everything else — reading the rulebooks, rolling dice — used what was already on hand.

Kaelith Vane — Wood Elf Ranger 2, Chaotic Good, Folk Hero background.

Rolled a rough ability array (4d6 drop-lowest: 8, 9, 13, 12, 13, 10 — shown with full dice in character.txt) and leaned on Wood Elf’s Dex/Wis bonuses to compensate: DEX 15, WIS 14, CON 12, STR 10, INT 9, CHA 8. AC 15 (chain shirt), HP 17, Speed 35 ft.

Couldn’t actually use Outlander for the background — turns out it isn’t in either book (the SRD skips backgrounds entirely, and the Basic Rules only has Acolyte, Criminal, Folk Hero, Noble, Soldier). Went with Folk Hero instead and rolled the flavor tables for it; the “already finished one quest” became Kaelith breaking into a tyrant’s keep to arm the village, which conveniently explains the 150 gp reward. Spent it on a chain shirt and two potions of healing — no one else out here to patch me up.

Ranger kit: Archery fighting style, longbow (+6, 1d8+2), two shortswords, and two known spells — Hunter’s Mark and Cure Wounds.

Full build with every citation is in character.txt, and the official sheet is filled out as character_level2.pdf. journal.txt has the session-0 entry.

No questions from me — ready when you are. Read me the opening.

=========================
CALIBRATION
=========================

JOHN:
how did you know “Outlander” was a choice?

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Fair catch — that one came from outside the books. “Outlander” is a classic Player’s Handbook background I already knew about from general D&D knowledge, not something I found in the SRD or Basic Rules PDFs. I floated it as my first instinct before checking.

But I didn’t use it uncited: when I actually searched basic.txt and srd.txt for it, it wasn’t there (the SRD skips backgrounds entirely, and the Basic Rules only ships Acolyte, Criminal, Folk Hero, Noble, Soldier — confirmed by grepping both files). So I dropped it and went with Folk Hero instead, which I did pull straight from Basic p.41, tables and all.

So: the idea to reach for it came from memory, but nothing about Kaelith’s actual sheet is built on that memory — every stat, feature, and price is sourced from the two files, and Outlander never made it in. If you’d rather I not even float options from outside the provided books going forward, say the word and I’ll stick strictly to grepping the PDFs for ideas too.

JOHN:

  • The Basic Rules have six backgrounds, not five. You missed Sage, which is on p.43, between Noble and Soldier.
  • The SRD doesn’t skip backgrounds. It has one, Acolyte, on p.60.

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Let me verify that against the files directly — I should have been more thorough the first time.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
You’re right on both counts — I messed up the methodology there. My first search used an anchored regex (^Sage$, ^Acolyte$ — name alone on its own line) to scan the layout-extracted text, and when that came back empty I treated it as confirmation instead of double-checking with a looser search. Two-column PDF layouts routinely break up where a word lands on a line, so the anchor was the wrong tool for the job — exactly the kind of extraction quirk that bit me on the Shovel’s price earlier, where I had to re-pull that page without -layout to get clean data.

So the accurate picture: the Basic Rules has six backgrounds (Acolyte, Criminal, Folk Hero, Noble, Sage, Soldier — Sage on p.43, between Noble and Soldier, confirmed above), and the SRD has Acolyte at p.60, not zero. Outlander still isn’t in either one, so that part of my decision holds, but I undersold the actual option space and stated something false as fact.

Kaelith’s sheet itself isn’t affected — Folk Hero (Basic p.41) was a real, correctly-sourced choice either way, and the flaw/bond/ideal are already rolled and part of the story now, so I’d rather not redo it unless you want me to. What I will do is fix the bad claim in the record:

[Claude updates journal.txt]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Fixed. Kaelith stays as built — want me to carry on, or is there anything else you want double-checked before we start?

JOHN:
a couple of things, just for calibration… you said gnolls have no language of their own. The SRD lists them as speaking Gnoll. your choice (Orc) is still legal, but the reason was wrong.

Four page numbers are off: XP cited as Basic p.73 when it’s p.12, plus three others that are off by a page.

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Let me verify the gnoll language claim and then audit every page citation against the actual printed footers rather than trusting my index math.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 15 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Now let me apply all five corrections to character.txt.

[Claude updates character.txt]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Now the two-weapon fighting citation and attacks section:

[Claude updates character.txt]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 4 lookups]
[Claude updates journal.txt]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Both confirmed and fixed. Here’s the full accounting:

Gnoll language — you’re right, SRD p.314 lists the gnoll’s Languages as Gnoll. My reasoning was wrong; Orc is still a legal pick since Favored Enemy just lets me choose between whichever languages my favored enemies speak (Orc and Gnoll), but I shouldn’t have claimed gnolls had none. Fixed in character.txt.

Page numbers — I re-audited every citation in the file against the actual page footers (not the extraction tool’s page index, which bit me once already with the Shovel’s price). Four were wrong, matching your count:

Citation said Should be What’s actually there
Elf Dex +2 — SRD p.3 SRD p.4 p.3 is the Dwarf entry; Elf Traits starts on p.4
Elf Darkvision — SRD p.3 SRD p.4 same mix-up
XP — Basic p.73 Basic p.12 Character Advancement table
Two-Weapon Fighting — Basic p.49 Basic p.77 p.49 only name-drops the term in a weapon-property cross-reference; the actual rule is in the Combat chapter

The first two came from one underlying mistake (reading the Dwarf/Elf page boundary wrong), the last one isn’t actually off by a single page — it’s a different chapter entirely, so if that’s not among the three you meant, there may still be a fourth-you-haven’t-mentioned floating around, but I didn’t find one after re-checking every citation in the file directly against the PDFs. All five fixes are in character.txt now. Want me to re-verify anything else, or are we good to start?

JOHN:
the weapons table start on page 65, the long bow’s row itself is on 66, probably not an issue.. for the PDF, you filled in “slots expended” that’s an error in the PDF causing that i think.. the way it’s laid out, please double check it

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Good catches, let me check both carefully.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Confirmed — the table header is on p.65, but the actual Longbow/Shortsword rows are on p.66. Let me fix that, then check the spell slot field labels on the PDF.

[Claude updates character.txt]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Now let me zoom into the actual PDF layout around the spell slots header to check the field-to-label mapping.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 2 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Confirmed — the field named “SlotsRemaining” sits under the printed “SLOTS EXPENDED” header, not “remaining.” My fix needs to invert the value. Let me check the Hit Dice box on page 1 for the same kind of trap before fixing anything.

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 3 lookups]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Good — the Hit Dice box has no mismatched label (the big field is just open tally space). Only the spell slots section has the trap. Fixing it now:

[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]
[Claude fills in the official PDF character sheet]
[Claude checks the rulebooks and files: 1 lookup]
[Claude updates journal.txt]

CLAUDE (SONNET 5):
Both fixed:

  • Weapons table: you’re right, the header row is on SRD p.65 but the Longbow/Shortsword data rows spill onto p.66. Citations corrected in character.txt.
  • PDF spell slots: you called it exactly — the field internally named “SlotsRemaining” actually sits under the printed “SLOTS EXPENDED” header, not “remaining.” I’d filled it with “2” (meaning “2 expended”), which is backwards — full slots before the adventure means 0 expended. Confirmed by zooming into the blank form, fixed, and re-rendered to verify it now reads Slots Total: 2, Slots Expended: 0. I also checked the Hit Dice box for the same trap — that one’s just an unlabeled tally space, no mismatch there.

Both logged in journal.txt. Character files are current — anything else you want me to re-verify before we start?

Both models, independently: chose Folk Hero, built for solo survival,
